The Evolution of Learning With Virtual Reality

Why Use This Technology?

David Bass-Clark, Unity College Distance Education's Director of AR/VR Research and Development shares how Extended Reality provides a level of access, connectivity, and immersion that creates meaningful and experiential learning for their students. Colleges and universities around the world are using virtual reality applications to problem solve, create real world learning scenarios, and to connect on and off campus communities.  In research from Radianti et al. (2020)"VR has been described as the learning aid of the 21st century (Rogers, 2019). A study suggests that students retain more information and can better apply what they had learned after participating in VR exercise".

Learning Applications & Resources to Explore

"Dissecting entire human cadavers in VR allows students to zoom into and explore body parts on a cellular level. “It’s a much more efficient and intuitive way to display and learn from this type of data..." (Walden, 2021). VR technology allows medical students to understand spatial relationships in a way that flat, or 2D, images and texts cannot. VR offers a student-centered approach to learning where "the diverse perspectives of individuals are respected, and learners are treated as co-creators of the learning process" (Watson, S. L. & Reigeluth, C. M., 2018).  In the image above (John Eisele Biomedical Students at Colorado State University's Clapp Lab Work in VR With a Chest CT Data Set to Learn Structural Relationships, 2021)  you see students working collabortively, yet in control of their learning experience.

"VirtualSpeech is being used by universities around the world to improve communication skills essential for employment after graduation. These skills require realistic practice, which is impossible to achieve on a consistent basis with traditional online learning methods" (Thompson, 2020).  Because VR can immerse students in real-world scenarios, training in soft skills that graduates need for the workforce becomes a possibility, as does the opportunity to analyze data from their VR interactions.  In the image above (In-App Screenshot of the Instant Voice Analytics inside the VirtualSpeech App, 2020) you see an in-app screenshot of the instant voice analytics available in the VirtualSpeech app. The applications for VR are endless, programs need only be creative in how they apply the technology.

"Gur Windmiller, an instructor in the astronomy department, has found VR "a perfect fit" for teaching students about astronomy. Concepts that can be hard to understand with verbal explanations suddenly make sense when students experience them visually, he explained in a university article. "It's a very visual subject," he said. (9 Amazing Uses for VR and AR in College Classrooms, 2019). VR applications can help students make learning connections through experiences they wouldn't normally have, whether that is experiencing space or reliving a historical event to gain new insights and perspective. In the above image (VR Helps Astronomy Students at San Diego State University Understand Concepts That Are Hard to Explain Verbally., 2019) the immersive world of VR takes the learner to new realms  of reality.

Tools Needed

Virtual Reality and Immersive Reality technology are rapidly developing, and with that development come options for institutions to utilize in their programming.
